İlkay Gündoğan Contract Extension

Today İlkay Gündoğan has signed a new contract at Manchester City that keeps him at the club until 2023.

But what does this mean for City going forward? Well I believe this is fantastic news for City as İlkay adds great strength and depth to the team. Although he may not always be a regular starter. He is always available to come off the bench and provide a creative spark in the midfield area.

This news could also hint, that star man of last season Fernandinho may play a more defensive role this season, maybe even slotting into the defence at times. With the new £62.8 million signing of Rodri who plays a similar role to Fernandinho, this could mean İlkay and Fernandinho spend less time on the pitch. But with İlkay Gündoğan and Fernandinho on the bench, other Premier League teams would find it very hard to compete with a team who has that sort depth.

İlkay Gündoğan has scored 17 goals in 115 appearances for Manchester City since his £25 million move from Borussia Dortmund in 2015. Manchester City have stated that they he has signed the contract extension to fit in with the peak of his career, so this can only be huge positives for the team and İlkay himself.

İlkay Gündoğan is a player highly rated by most Mancheter City fans, so the news of his contract extension has recieved excellent responses. Many fans saying how underrated he is as a footballer. So I believe as a whole this news is a huge boost, especially as it comes a day before the start of the new season.
